In August 2022 it was announced that the Coast to Coast will become a new National Trail. By this we mean that two vehicles are required, one should be left at the end of the route in Slaithwaite and then the group should drive to the start point at Wessenden Head. This Black Route starts at Wessenden Head just outside Meltham in West Yorkshire. There are many approaches to Blencathra's summit with a traverse of Sharp edge the most challenging. The Howgill Fells provide excellent walking and generally see few walkers.
